Something New

I haven't tried using filters yet, but have often wished I had a polarizing filter. You know those times - when you look at a scene through your sunglasses and everything looks so wonderful, then you take off your glasses to take a picture and everything looks so different. Details get lost in glare. Ahhh, the love-hate relationship we have with the sun.

We are planning a trip to Florida to visit family and I decided this would be a great excuse to buy a filter. But, what should I get???

I read the reviews and decided a Hoya would be a good place to start. I was looking specifically for a polarizer, but found this....

It seemed like a good deal and the shipping was free. I placed my order. Delivery is expected in about a week. I can't wait to try it out. If anyone has experience with filters, I would love to hear your thoughts.

Okay, abstract photography is a bit of a departure for me. Any guesses of what this can be??

I haven't had many good wildlife opportunities lately. Sunday, we had a brief period of sun and I headed out into our yard in search of anything photogenic. There were several goldfinches at the feeders, but they quickly took flight when I approached. I wandered past my son's car in the driveway and noticed the sun reflecting off the melting ice on his windshield. I zoomed in and took a few shots. The yellow orange waves were caused by the reflection of the log walls of our home. I enhanced the colors a tad in Photoshop which brightened the more golden brown hue to the brighter yellow you see.

It's fun to experiment with something new and work outside your comfort zone.

These shots were taken at Mendon Ponds a few weeks ago. It was a frigid morning (rare this winter) but that didn't keep folks away. In fact, I think there were more human bird feeders on the "Birdsong Trail" than usual.

It's been a mild winter and we have come to learn that the birds will eat from your hand more readily when it is cold and the ground is snow covered. Which might explain the crowd on this one cold day. You can certainly keep your gloves on, but we like to feel their tiny feet against our skin.

My son gifted me with his old version of Photoshop CS2 this weekend. I am both excited and frustrated. I am so used to GIMP, that I am finding it difficult to navigate Photoshop. Michelle wanted some new slides for her You Tube videos, so I pulled out some shots of her and played around with my new toy.

The slides are cover photos that flash briefly before her video begins. She doesn't like to use a traditional photo for this. I have done pencil sketch edits on some of her photos in the past, but I think I like the "cut out" filter I used here even better. I had to change the shape and size of the image to fit the You Tube format. What do you think?

Hmmm....I believe I'm noticing a pattern here :)
These shots were taken 1 week apart. Notice the snow in the first shot, and the green bits in the second? That speaks volumes about our winter this year.

These were taken at Mendon Ponds. There is a section of trail here where people have fed the birds for years. They are so accustomed to people that they will gladly eat out of your hand. This only works in the Winter when they have to work a bit harder for food.

I have had good luck feeding the birds from my hand in my own back yard, too, but there are many more birds in this park. chickadees, nuthatches and tufted titmice will gladly alight on you. Cardinals and jays are tougher to get close too, and prefer to eat off the ground.

Grapevine's In Winter

Okay, it doesn't look much like winter, but it is February in NY. I love the grape vines in all seasons. This is another shot from my drive with Sophie last weekend.

Yesterday, after reading about Blogger changes at Jill's Blog I did an internet search and read that Blogger was making changes in the way the "follow me" gadget works that would make it accessible only to blogger users. This change is said to be taking effect on March 1st. I can't find anything official from blogger about this. Has anyone seen an announcement of any kind from Blogger?

I have added a Linky Followers widget in hopes of keeping my word press friends. It seems like a good tool with some extra features. I especially like the "featured follower" wiget.

Fun With Picasa

Some folks have asked me about alternatives to Picnik (now that it is closing). I actually use Gimp for most of my editing, but recently added Picasa to the mix. Both are free downloads. Picasa is simple to use and has many of the same features as Picnik. These are some shots from my Saturday "Barn Hunt" drive with Sophie, all edited in Picasa.

I like the combination of '60s and cross process - I used it here

Orton-ish brought out depth and color to this shot.

Self Portrait

I have been feeling that it's time to replace my avatar with a photo that actually shows my face. So, last night, when I got home from work, I set up the tripod and stepped out from behind the camera. It felt extremely awkward. I didn't fuss with make-up or clothes. I wanted it to be natural and casual. I used my remote shutter release, which worked pretty well. At first, I tried using auto focus, but the camera kept focusing behind me. So, I switched to manual and placed one of Sophie's toys where I thought I wanted to focus. There was little light, and I don't have an external flash. I tried the on-board flash, but it was too harsh, so I made do with the available light.

My son says my hair looks weird. Whatever.....I'm not a fussy gal. I'm sure my hair frequently looks weird. There are shadows, I know, but, I am in no hurry to do this again. I much prefer being behind the camera.

Premium Picnik For Free

I only discovered Picnik a short time ago and now they are closing. I admit, I haven't used it much, but it is a fun and easy to use on-line photo editor. The up side to this is that they have opened all of the premium functions to free users. Picnik officially closes on April 19th, so I thought I'd try out some of the premium features I've been missing. The announcement states they will be offering photo editing on Google+, but I haven't investigated that yet. Does anyone know anything about that?

A Gaggle of Geese

What the Canada goose lacks in uniqueness, it makes up for in sheer quantity. Perhaps they have been here over Winter in the past, but I have never noticed them in the numbers I have seen this year. I have read that groups can reach 250, but I promise you, this group was much, much larger. There were many more I could not fit into the frame. Though considered a pest by many, I can't help enjoying their honking. This was one loud group!

Shakin' Off The Snow

I totally need to start using my tripod. I am usually on foot and birds are so small and quick, I feel too restricted with the tripod. I did brace myself against a tree and used a wide base of support. For crystal clear shots, though, my shutter speed should be at least as great as my focal length when shooting hand held. I am trying to keep my ISO as low as possible to reduce noise, so I have to find other ways to adjust my exposure. I have found that larger apertures mute some of the fine details I want to see, so, that leaves me with reducing the shutter speed.

It is all trial and error, but I am starting to know what my camera can and can't do. Hmmm....does that mean I'm ready for a new camera?! : )

A little Splash of Color

I put on my long johns and braved the cold this morning for a little bird watching. I placed a small pile of seed on the ground and hunkered down against a tree. I didn't have to wait long.

First came the Cardinals; 3 men and 2 ladies. The Chickadees were there too. They are ever present. Then, a few sparrows stopped by. 3 jays watched from the distance, but they were too skittish to come close.
About an hour later 2 Tufted Titmice, 2 Juncos, and a White Breasted Nuthatch joined in. I did see one doe walk by, through the trees, but I couldn't get a good shot of her.
The sun even came out, in spite of the weather forecast to the contrary. All in all, a good morning in the woods : )

A shot taken while birding last weekend - one I thought I had lost.

The IT guy says no viruses. He thinks my hard drive may be going, but was able to get everything working again and saved my photos. I spent my evening copying them to my new external hard drive, and plan to work on DVD back up this weekend as well.

My laptop is not 2 years old yet. We shall see how long it lasts.

Computer Crash!

I am posting this from our very old and very slow desktop, which, by the way, does not have any of my recent photos on it : (

My son is taking my precious laptop - with all my photos on it - to his IT guy today. Cross your fingers for me please. We all know we need to back up our files, but I admit to getting lazy in this area. My external was full and disks just seemed like a hassel, I've never had a problem, so didn't rush out to purchase another external. (I'll be buying one today).

What happened? I was working on a photo in Picasa when the program stopped responding and my computer froze. I had to shut it down manually. When I turned it back on, it said that something was wrong with windows, possibly due to a new program installation, and asked me to run a fix for this. (the only new program I installed was Picasa) I let it do it's thing, but when it finished, all I had was a blue screen. I tried a few other things, always ending with the same blue screen. My son told me it was "The Blue Screen of Death" but I read about this, and it doesn't seem to fit.

It may take a couple of days, I'll let you know how this all turns out.

Back up those precious files!

Snowy Barn

I posted this barn 2 weeks ago, but I liked it so well, I decided to go back and take another shot this weekend with the snow. I hope you don't mind a repeat.

I played with it in Picasa and kind of like this old tyme look. My husband says it's too white and prefers the SOOC version. I tried to do a mouseover for you, but just couldn't make it work tonight, so I am posting the SOOC shot below.

Hmmm....Friday the 13th :-)
The roads are a bit slick and the wind is wickedly blowing and drifting the snow, but I dare not complain as I have been waiting for this.

I was excited to don my new winter boots this morning (which have been gathering dust since I got them). No time for pictures on my way to work (it was too dark anyway) but I managed these when I got home. I confess to shooting them right off my deck. It's getting dark already, so I guess I'll have to wait till tomorrow to go out and play :-(

I've been so busy with work, and preparations for the coming holidays that I haven't had a chance to get out with my camera.

Tonight, as I pulled up our drive, I was greeted by 6 doe. It was getting dark, but, I ran into the house and grabbed my camera. No time for a tripod. I tried to step quietly onto the front porch. The deer scattered; all but this one.

She stood still for a moment.

Then, turned and wandered off into the woods.

They are getting their thick winter coats now. The temperatures are getting colder, even though we still have green grass. I forget how luxurious those tails are as I am usually trying for head shots.

I've been decking the halls! Our Christmas village and old train has been a family tradition since our boys were little. It was a fun still life to shoot. I edited in Picnik using the winterize, focal soften, matte, and snow tools.

Some Portrait Fun With My 50mm

Michelle and I are a perfect match. I love taking pictures, and she loves having her picture taken. Wildlife photography is my first love, but Michelle has fired up an interest in portrait photography for me too.

I couldn't choose just one, so you got several in collage form.

All of these were shot at f 1.8 which was a bit tricky. It was dreary and overcast and I wanted to keep my ISO at 100. Getting the focus right with such a large aperture was tough at first, but a few practice shots, and I felt pretty comfortable.

Michelle loves to have her picture taken, but my middle son, Sean, hides from my camera. When I do get a shot of him, he is usually making a face or closes his eyes.

I was able to get this candid shot on Saturday with a little help from Michelle and my nifty 50. That's a pretty handsome couple ...sigh....smile. All but that awful beard. He was growing it for a winter foot race. The plan is to color it white for Christmas, then clean it up a bit. I can't wait for the clean up ;)

Behind The Camera #28.... A Photo Editing Project

Michelle asked me if I could make her a cover for her You Tube videos that was not a photograph. She said she wanted a solid color background with her name and facebook page typed on it. I told her I had an idea she might like.

I took some shots of her that I had and edited them in Picnik using pencil sketch followed by duo-tone, then added the text she wanted. They are "wide screen" versions so they will (hopefully) fit her You Tube videos with no black bars. What do you think?

Behind The Camara #27 An Unexpected Surprise

Saturday, I took a break from work, and the preparations for the coming holiday and took a walk at Ontario County Park, with my 50 mm, of course. There were patches of snow around, but nothing significant, and the trail was clear, except for some puddles. As I approached the scenic overlook, known as "the jump off", I was delighted to see this fellow on the path in front of me.

I edited him with picnik, using a combination of the 60's effect and cross processing.

Behind The Camera #26 ....Mountain Lion

I do love a close up. This shot was taken through the glass in a viewing area at the zoo, hence the milky softness. I was using my 70-300 lens. When she walked up, close to the glass, I tried to step back, but someone had come up and was standing right behind me. I couldn't move. She was moving fast and there was a glare on the glass. I shot anyway, and I'm glad I did. Don't you just love happy accidents?

That is my son, Joel, and his girlfriend, Annie. There is a tunnel that runs under the ground and up into this little glass viewing box, right in the mountain lion habitat. You have to crawl on your hands and knees through the tunnel to get there.

Joel and Annie said they could hear her deep purring sounds as she passed by them.

A Christmas Gift Idea....SPOILER ALERT FOR MY FAMILY

      Last year, I made calendars for my family. I showcased some of my best shots of the year, labeled all our birthdays and aniversaries, and even put a picture of each person in their birthday square.
     It was a hit, so I am making it a new tradition. I am sharing this now, because, if you want to give it a try, it takes time to go through all your shots.
     I use Mpix. The website is user friendly and the quality is excellent. The cost is $20 per calendar. But, if you make several of the same calendar the cost goes down.
    Here is the December page of the one I am working on.

As for the fishy Wal Mart guy...The Wal Mart the kids were at is near Michelle's home, about 2 hours from us. The kids don't like confrontation, and have asked me not to persue. I fought the battle, but lost the war. At least they didn't sign anything.

I personally don't use Wal Mart, I like Mpix, but I gave Michelle the rights to her photos, so she can do as she wishes with them. As for concerns about posting photos on a blog, I shrink my files and remove camera data before posting. Hopefully, that will limit what a thief can do with the shots.

Something Smells Fishy To Me

So, Sean and Michelle go to Wal Mart to have some prints made of some of the shots I have taken of Michelle. See them here , here and here. The man at the photo department told them that he could not sell them the prints without a copyright form. The kids explained that the photo's were taken by their mother, and that I am not a professional photographer. He told them he was a professional photographer and said the shots looked professional to him. He produced a copyright form and told them they could sign it stating that he was the photographer who took the photos, then he could sell them the prints.

At first I thought this was funny and I was flattered, but as I think about it, I think this guy was just trying to steal my stuff! Does anyone have any thoughts or insight on this?

A Day At The Zoo

Okay, I admit it. I have been a zoo photography snob. It just seems like cheating; kind of like hunting on a farm. But, on Saturday, I went to the zoo with my son and his girlfriend. I started to think...I am likely never going to see most of these creatures in the wild, so why not? Our local zoo is very small and it is sad seeing them all in cages, but I know that many of these animals have been ill or injured and would not have survived in the wild.

This will be a dead give away for anyone familiar with the finger lakes region of NY state.

Just as we were walking up to this viewing area the train came into view. I was so excited. This scene is beautiful with just the trestles, but the train was such a wonderful added bonus.

This is the same scene from a nearer vantage point.

When I opened this photo on my computer, I was immediately struck by a peculiarity in the image.

Do you see what I saw?

Look in the upper left hand corner.

I see the face of a native American woman.

Of the 6 people I have showed, 4 have seen her.

I know it is just a trick of light through the leaves, but still, knowing the strong history of the Seneca people here, I can't help but wonder.

Have you ever noticed how when we get a vacation, we can't wait to go somewhere wonderful? Every time I travel, the locals ask,"Why did you want to come here?" I tell them, "the landscape, the culture, the history." We get so caught up in our day to day responsibilities that we forget we have amazing things in our own back yard.

There is an amazing place about an hour from my home that I have only visited once, several years ago. I always say I'm going to go, but I never quite make it. But, yesterday, I did it! I batted my eyes at my Honey and asked if we could put aside all the work that needs to be done for one day and he agreed.

I'm going to post a photo each day this week that I took in this place. Then, next Monday, I will reveal my destination in my "Behind The Camera Post". The pictures will offer more clues as the week progresses. Feel free to make guesses along the way, but I won't reveal the answer until Monday : )

Behind The Camera # 24 ........Canandaigua Inlet.

This is a view of Canandaigua Inlet, where I did my kayaking this summer. It looks very different now, with everything turning brown. This shot was taken from county road 12 (I call it "the high road").
There are many wonderful views of Canandaigua Lake from this road.

The inlet is located at the southern end of the lake and offers miles of marshland to explore. During the summer months, the weeds grows so dense that, in some spots, it was like paddling on carpet. I think that is one of the things that makes this a favorite spot of ducks.

I wanted to get out in the Kayaks for the Fall migration, but the rainy weather kept me off the water. Taking my camera in the kayak is challenging enough. I didn't want to add rain to the mix. Guess I will have to look forward to Spring.

Too Much Light?

I was so excited about the wonderful sunny day we had today. It seems I am always complaining about the lack of good natural light, so I feel silly complaining about too much light.

I've been wanting to try a slow shutter speed for soft water, and when we came upon this scene, I decided it was time to give it a try. The sunlight, however, was so bright that even in the shade with an ISO of 100, I had to be careful not to overexpose my shot. This was taken with a ss of 1/3 (using my tripod, of course).

Behind The Camera # 23...Feathered Friends

Yep, that's my hand. Feeding the birds is one of my favorite things. I have been able to get my backyard birds to eat from my hand, but, I also like to visit the Birdsong Trail at Mendon Ponds. The birds there are used to people and will happily eat out of your hand during the winter months when food is a bit more scarce. It is a bit early, but I did have a few little visitors. Nuthatches, Chickadees, and Tufted Titmice have all eaten from my hand. I have seen photos of Red Bellied Woodpeckers eating from people's hands here, but I haven't had that particular experience....yet :)

I used my 50 mm lens for these, reached my arm out, and focused on my finger tips. When my little friend landed, I took the shot. It was a bit tricky to hold steady with one hand, and my arms got really tired while waiting for a visitor, but it was fun!

I was focused on the doe from my previous post, sneaking up on her bit by bit. My husband says I have to pay more attention to what is going on around me when I am looking through my camera. If I get something in my sights, I tend to focus on it so intensely that I am oblivious to everything else around me. He fears for my safety, but, there is another side to that coin.

When I came too close, the deer wandered off into the thick. I stood there, thinking, "well, that was fun. Now what can I shoot? Color?" I looked up at the leaves on the tree to see if the changing leaves would make a good shot. That is when I saw this amazing bit of archetecture, suspended right over my head!

Meet Sophie, our 1 1/2 year old pound puppy.

This is how she looks out the window whenever someone pulls up the driveway. She will sit like this, watching, until whoever it is comes in to say hello.

She will snuggle, when she wants to. But, look out for the "CHOMP"! When she is loving you, she likes to chew on your arm a bit - never with intention to hurt, but sometimes it does. Still a bit of puppy behavior...I hope. ???

She can do a few tricks - beg, sit, lay down, and high five.

We got her 2 weeks after loosing our Lab, Maggie. The whole first summer we had her, she would lay down in the garden in the very spot where Maggie's ashes are buried. She hasn't done that in a while. I wonder if Maggie was looking over her, and us, and now has moved on.

I went out looking for Fall colors this morning, in spite of the rain and wind. Fall is my favorite season, and the colors fade quickly, so I'm making the most of it.

I don't think there is a right or wrong answer to this. I believe it is in the eye of the beholder. To me, a photo is "Art" if it makes you feel something, regardless of it's ability to please the eye.

Behind The Camera #21....I finally got my BUCK!

He's a bit noisy, but, I got him.

We finally had some nice weather this weekend and I was determined to carve out a few hours for photography. Saturday did not start out well. I forgot to charge my battery Friday night and I couldn't find my charger. (We have been doing some construction at home, and things have been a bit out of place.) By the time I found it, it was 7:30 AM. I let it charge for 30 minutes. Not long enough, but, it would have to do. The drive to Mendon, where I had planned on going is about 30 minutes. Not exactly the early start I was hoping for. I considered staying home, but the weather was so nice, I had to give it a shot.

I spotted this handsome fellow from the road. At first, I took some shots from the car, but just wasn't close enough. I quietly got out and walked closer. Bit by bit, and using trees for cover.

Tiny Dancers

These little ladies are ready for their Fall recital.

Taken with my 70-300 mm lens and edited in Picnik. I was really happy with how these turned out. I could do without the pesky aphids, though.

Michelle and Sean waited in line for 13 hours yesterday before she got to perform. Sean said she did well, though, and he is usually brutally honest. This was a performance for the producers. Now, Michelle will have to wait till the Spring, when they will notify those chosen to perform for the judges.

Behind The Camera # 20 - Great Blue Heron

These were taken last weekend on my visit to Montezuma. I spotted this fellow through the tall grass along the drive. Other cars in front of me had driven right past. I don't know if they missed him, or simply weren't interested. I pulled over on the side of the road and turned off my engine. (They ask that you remain in your car while on the drive as it serves as a blind.) My window was already down. I don't have a window mount tripod, but I do have a pillow that fits nicely over the door /window. I rested my camera on it. He hadn't moved. I took a couple of shots.

The overcast day made the reflections extra nice.
I turned the camera so that I could capture his whole reflection.

A bit further up the road was a large pool where I saw more than a dozen each of herons and egrets. They were on the right hand side of the road, so I had to climb across to the passenger seat.

It was nice seeing so many all at once, but, they were pretty far away. Maybe those folks that sped on by that earlier heron knew these would be here. Still, I'm glad I stopped.

Behind The Camera #19....Bald Eagle

What an exciting moment this was. I've been wanting to make a trip to Montezuma for the Fall migration, but just haven't been able to fit it into my schedule. Saturday found me home alone, so I decided this was my chance, house cleaning could wait.

The sky was overcast, but as least it wasn't raining. I started with the drive. (There is a drive through the park with good opportunities to spot birds and wildlife, but you have to stay in your car.) I had a few sightings, but, being a walk around kind of gal, I headed back to the visitor center and a 1 mile trail along the canal.

I saw one heron flying across the canal, but there was no other activity. I was getting ready to change to my short lens so I could get a few shots of a bridge across the canal when I saw a large bird flying toward me. I could tell it wasn't a buzzard by the way it was flying. I looked through my lens, but still wasn't sure. It flew over me. Imagine my delight when I saw that white head! It was pretty far away, and my shots are heavily cropped, but I got an Eagle!

I pass this barn every day. It is small, and kind of plain. I was never really inspired to take a photo of it until Friday when those amazing clouds and goldenrod made it photo-worthy. I had to break the rules of composition in order to include the goldenrod, and not include some less attractive surroundings, but it works for me anyway.

I hope this works. I've been wanting to learn how to create a mouse over and this is my first attempt. If I did it right, you should be able to scroll your mouse over the image and see the un-edited SOOC version.

I took this shot last weekend at Mendon Ponds while I was walking the trails in hopes having an encounter with a Buck. I liked the single ray of light. It was pretty dark in the shade of the trees, and the early morning mist was still hanging around. The original looked a little washed out, so I gave it a little tweak using levels in GIMP. My husband says I shouldn't share my "bad" shots (which is what he thinks this one is) but I wanted to show you that a less than perfect shot can be salvaged with a little work in the digital darkroom.

Doing the mouse over requires editing the HTML code. Tricia over at Bluff Area Daily does these all the time and I just love to see the before and after. I used the tutorial link she posted to do this today.

I'm In Love....

With my new lens! I tend to subscribe to the school of thought that something really good usually comes with a high price tag, and I do believe that, in general, you get what you pay for. Today I learned that I could fall in love with a $200 lens. I know, $200 is still a lot of money, but for anyone who has shopped for lenses, that is a very small price tag.

My new Nikon 50mm f/1.8G AF-S lens arrived this evening. It was dreary and foggy outside, perfect for testing out the capabilities of this smart looking lens. These are my first, rather random shots from around my house.

Looking For Antlered Deer

In the Spring, I was looking for Doe and Fawns but found buck with the beginnings of antlers. So, I guess it follows that, now that Fall is approaching, and, the buck should be sporting some nice racks, I go looking for them, but find doe and fawns instead.

These were shot from my car window. I don't have a tripod that attaches to my car, but I have found that, in a pinch, a firm pillow will do the trick. Just place it over your open window and rest your camera on it. I do most of my shooting hand held, but with such a slow shutter speed, it's good to have all the help you can get. I also make sure to turn off my engine when shooting from a car to reduce any vibration.

One of the things I love most about living in New York state is the dramatic change of seasons. We are beginning to see some signs of Fall here.

This was the first weekend of picking at The Apple Farm. It was dreary and drizzly, but that didn't keep me from picking enough for a pie or two.

It's a family farm.

Macintosh were ready now. We'll have to wait a couple more weeks for some of the other varieties.

I went out to Mendon Ponds for a couple of hours on Saturday morning, hoping to see some buck in velvet, but had no luck. I decided to check out the butterfly garden before leaving. At first there were only a few cabbage whites, but, little by little, I had some other visitors. I was watching this little skipper, when I noticed that the flower had come off on his tongue. He kept trying to curl his tongue back under his chin, but couldn't with the flower stuck on there. After a while he flew off, with the flower still in tow. Do you suppose he ever got it off?
